Seattle's a big city full of unique sites and attractions like Gas Works park, the Museum of History and Industry, and of course, the Ballard Locks. Towards the end of the Locks Cruise we encourage our guests to continue the adventure in the neighborhood of South Lake Union or Pier 55 downtown. Below are 5 reasons to choose the Stay & Play route when you book your next Locks Cruise, plus resources to help plan your day.
1. There's so much to see and do
Downtown and South Lake Union (SLU) are two Seattle hubs of cuisine, entertainment, and gorgeous outdoor parks. Thanks to the growing tech industry, SLU area is booming with new restaurants and art spaces. Meanwhile downtown, the Viaduct structure is being deconstructed piece by piece, transforming our waterfront to an even more welcoming space. From Pier 55 it's a quick walk to the world-renowned Pike Place Market, or a bar crawl towards the stadium. No matter which way you end the cruise, there's lots of activities to check out before heading back where you came from.
2. You're closer to adjacent neighborhoods
A one-way trip allows for easier access to the colorful and varying neighborhoods of Seattle. If your cruise ends in South Lake Union, the artsy neighborhoods of Fremont or Ballard are a 15-20 minute car ride away (we recommend a ride share app). Pier 55 is close to the historic Pioneer Square, about a 20 minute walk south. If your next stop is the Mariners game, taking a Locks Cruise before is a perfect pre-game activity.
3. Get those steps in
After a cruise, there's nothing like stretching your legs for a stroll. It's a flat 'n easy 45 minute walk from Pier 55 to SLU, and there's no shortage of things to see and experience along the way. Arrive in SLU and walk to Seattle Center where you can visit the Space Needle, Science Center, Museum of Pop Culture, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. If ending at Pier 55, take some time to linger along the waterfront (hey, is that a harbor seal?), shop at Pike Place Market, and even visit the aquarium.
4. Make plans on your terms
Feel like exploring rather than sticking to a plan? The one-way trip allows you to spread your freedom wings and fly! With so many transportation choices like the bus, South Lake Union Train, Monorail, light rail and ride share apps, you'll have access to any part of the city when you're ready.
5. Stay and play on the water in SLU
In the summertime, chances area it's a beautiful day in Seattle which means everyone is on the water having fun in the sun. Bring a swim suit and hop into the lake with a kayak, paddle board, or one of the famous SLU hot tub boats. When you've had your fill, walk across the street to the air conditioned Art Marble 21 for arcade games and happy hour.
